In order to commemorate the seventeen-year-old endangered Silverback lowland gorilla who was killed by a zoo worker after he attacked a three-year-old boy who fell into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, a petition began circulating to impel the National Hurricane Center to change the name of Tropical Storm Hermine to Tropical Storm Harambe.
The petition creator, Jimmy Neutron, (no, not the Nickelodeon boy genius with ice cream cone hair) stated, "Tropical Storm Hermine sounds terrible, and is disrespectful to the great Harambe. To honor Harambe, a renaming is required to continue his legacy."
Many have taken to Twitter and other social media outlets to express their feelings towards the petition. One local even stating, "I think true sadness is when your mom says no to surfing during the only good waves in weeks #TropicalStormHarambe."
If we renamed the Tropical Storm "H" after a gorilla of his stature, it might just grow into a category 5 right before our very eyes― not good for business on the beach! Although Hurricane "H" is only just barely a category 1, it's still a big deal for Floridians. This is the First hurricane to barrel its way through Northwest Florida since Hurricane Dennis in 2005. That's eleven years!
